Overview

Why Visa Condition 8607: Work in the Nominated Occupation Only?

Information checked 31 October 2026.

Condition 8607 applies to Temporary Skill Shortage and Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa holders. The holder must only work in the occupation nominated in their most recently granted 482 visa, and only for the business that nominated them, unless they have an exemption.

Work rights and key limits

  • Work only in the occupation nominated in the most recently granted 482 visa. A different occupation needs a new Skills in Demand visa.
  • Work only for the business that nominated them, unless they have an exemption. Some streams can also work for an associated entity of the sponsor.
  • A new employer must get a nomination approved before the worker starts with them.
  • If employment with the sponsor ends, the holder can stop working or work outside these conditions for up to 180 days in a single period and 365 days in total across the visa (counted from 1 July 2024).
  • The holder must start work within 90 days of arriving in Australia, or of the visa grant if they were already in Australia.
  • Any mandatory licence, registration or membership for the job must be held and complied with.

What to check before they start

  1. Confirm a nomination for your business and this occupation is approved before the worker starts.
  2. Check any licence or registration the role legally needs is current.
  3. With the worker's consent, check their visa and its conditions through VEVO before they start, and keep the result on file.
  4. It is against the law to hire a non-citizen who does not hold a valid visa, or to have them do work that goes against their visa conditions.

RefChecks runs a Right to Work check through VEVO: the worker gives consent and their details, and you get their visa, its conditions and expiry in their report. Related: Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), condition 8107.
