The Northern Territory's working with children clearance — universally known as the Ochre Card — is issued by SAFE NT, the screening authority inside NT Police. Being police-run is itself a point of difference: most states house their scheme in a justice or human-services department.
The application fee is $89 for workers, reduced to $8 for volunteers who attach a completed volunteer concession form (2026–27). Anyone 15 or older seeking to work with people under 18 can apply, online through SAFE NT, in person, or by post. A duplicate certificate costs $35.
The defining feature of the NT scheme is its 2-year validity — the shortest cycle in Australia, against 3 years in Queensland and WA and 5 years elsewhere. For employers this doubles the renewal-tracking workload per worker: an Ochre Card that was current at hire can lapse well within an ordinary employment tenure, and working with children on an expired card is an offence carrying penalties of up to $88,000.
