Overview

Why Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462): Work Rights for Employers?

Information checked 31 October 2026.

The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) lets people aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) have an extended holiday in Australia and work to help fund it. As with the Working Holiday visa, Home Affairs says that usually, holders can only work for the same employer for 6 months.

Work rights and key limits

  • The visa is for people aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) on an extended holiday who work to help fund their trip.
  • Usually, the holder can only work for the same employer for 6 months (condition 8547).
  • Holders must pay tax on work in Australia, and the employer must pay superannuation if they earn more than a set amount.

What to check before they start

  1. Confirm the visa is a subclass 462 and note condition 8547 on the grant.
  2. Record the start date so you know when the worker reaches 6 months with your business.
  3. With the worker's consent, check their visa and its conditions through VEVO before they start, and keep the result on file.
  4. It is against the law to hire a non-citizen who does not hold a valid visa, or to have them do work that goes against their visa conditions.

RefChecks runs a Right to Work check through VEVO: the worker gives consent and their details, and you get their visa, its conditions and expiry in their report. Related: condition 8547, Working Holiday visa (subclass 417).
