Why Visa Condition 8547: The 6-Month Employer Limit Explained?

Information checked 31 October 2026.

Condition 8547 means the holder must not be employed by any one employer for more than 6 months without the prior permission in writing of the Secretary of the Department. It is the condition behind the 6-month rule on working holiday visas.

Work rights and key limits

  • The holder must not be employed by any one employer for more than 6 months.
  • Working longer for the same employer needs the prior written permission of the Secretary of the Department.

What to check before they start

  1. Look for condition 8547 on the grant and record the worker's start date with your business.
  2. Plan the end of the engagement, or confirm written permission, before the 6 months is reached.
  3. With the worker's consent, check their visa and its conditions through VEVO before they start, and keep the result on file.
  4. It is against the law to hire a non-citizen who does not hold a valid visa, or to have them do work that goes against their visa conditions.

RefChecks runs a Right to Work check through VEVO: the worker gives consent and their details, and you get their visa, its conditions and expiry in their report. Related: Working Holiday visa (subclass 417), Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462).
