Overview

Why EWP Licence & Yellow Card Check?

An EWP Yellow Card is the industry card for operating elevating work platforms that don't need a licence: scissor lifts, vertical lifts, trailer-mounted lifts and boom lifts with a boom under 11 metres. When people search for an "EWP licence", this is usually the card they mean. A boom-type EWP with a boom of 11 metres or more is different: it needs a High Risk Work Licence in the WP class, and a Yellow Card does not cover it.

The card is issued after training with an RTO under the Elevating Work Platform Association's Yellow Card program. It lists the classes the operator is trained for: SL (scissor lift), VL (vertical lift), BL (boom lift under 11m) and TL (trailer-mounted lift). There is no legislated expiry, though the industry recommends a refresher every 5 years.

How to check a worker's EWP Yellow Card

  1. Ask for the card (physical or digital) or the Statement of Attainment, not just a card number.
  2. Match the classes on the card to the machine. A worker with SL only should not be on a boom lift.
  3. If the boom is 11 metres or more, ask for a High Risk Work Licence with the WP class instead.
  4. Check the issue date against your own refresher rule, and keep a copy on file.

With RefChecks the worker uploads their card through a secure link. We confirm the card number, the worker's name, the class endorsements and the issue date, and save the result in their report. If the role needs more, you can add a Working at Heights check or a VOC in the same order.

What's Included

EWP Licence & Yellow Card Check Features

Construction & Fit-Out

Scissor lifts and small booms are everywhere on fit-out and commercial sites. Principal contractors ask subcontractors to show a valid card for each operator.

Facilities & Maintenance

Electrical, signage and building maintenance contractors use EWPs daily. Checking the card class stops a scissor-only operator ending up on a boom.

Labour Hire

Labour hire firms placing general hands and trades assistants verify Yellow Cards before the first shift, so the host employer is covered.

Warehousing & Events

Warehouse, retail fit-out and event crews often use vertical and trailer lifts. The card shows which classes each worker can operate.
