Safe Work Australia's model WHS regulations place obligations on employers in safety-critical industries to manage impairment risks. A compliant testing programme includes chain of custody documentation, trained collectors, and NATA-accredited laboratory confirmation for any non-negative results.

When an initial screen returns a non-negative result, the process does not end there. The specimen is sent to a NATA-accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing using mass spectrometry. A Medical Review Officer (MRO) then assesses the confirmed result in context — including any legitimate prescription medication — before the final outcome is reported to the employer. This multi-step process protects both the employer and the candidate from incorrect outcomes.
