Overview

Why Audiometry Test (Pre-Employment Hearing Test)?

An audiometry test is a hearing test that measures the quietest sounds a person can hear across a range of frequencies, in each ear. It is done in a sound-treated booth with headphones and produces an audiogram, a chart of the person's hearing. Done before employment, it records a baseline, so any later hearing loss from workplace noise can be seen.

Under the model WHS Regulations, an employer must provide audiometric testing for a worker who frequently has to wear hearing protection because of noise above the exposure standard. The first test is due within 3 months of the worker starting that work, and then at least every 2 years. Victoria's OHS Regulations set a similar requirement. In practice, mining, construction, manufacturing, rail and transport employers often test new starters as part of the pre-employment medical.

How booking works

You order the audiometry test from Background Checks. The candidate gets a link, picks a partner clinic and a time near them, and attends. The clinic sends its report back and it lands in your RefChecks dashboard, stored with the candidate's file. Audiometry can be booked on its own, with a drivers medical in one visit, or as part of a pre-employment medical.
